When do I need to get a building permit?
Before you erect, install, build, change the structure of a building, move, or modify a structure, you need a building permit. Any structural change to an existing structure requires a permit. Check with the village clerk for the appropriate permit application.
Do I need a permit to replace existing roofing shingles?

Yes, if the roof is being replaced, you will need a permit; patching does not require a permit.

Do I need a permit to replace windows?

No, as long as the opening size is not changed.

Do I need a permit for a swimming pool?

Yes, all swimming pools and hot tubs require a permit. This includes in-ground, above-ground, and on-ground pools.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

Yes

Do I need a permit for a small portable storage shed?

Maybe, all sheds over 200 sf need a permit.

Can I burn leaves in the Village?

Yes, however, leaves must be burned on private property, not on village streets or alleys.

Does the Village have a property maintenance policy?

Yes, residents are expected to keep lawns mowed and free of weeds. Junk and trash should not be allowed to accumulate.  Unlicensed vehicles must be parked in an enclosed area.

How can I reserve a pavilion in the park?

Contact the Village Clerk for reservations.

Is a deposit required for water, sewer, and trash service?

Yes, the charge is $150 ($75 for water and $75 for sewer).

Is there an occupancy inspection required for rental units?

Yes, the building inspector must inspect all rentals and an occupancy permit must be issued before the water can be turned on.

How is trash service arranged?

The Village of Pocahontas contracts with Republic Service. Residents are billed monthly on their utility bills for 1 trash receptacle. If you would like an additional trash can, you must call Republic Service and set this up.

When does trash get picked up?

Trash pick-up is on Wednesdays.  We ask that receptacles be placed on the curb by 6 a.m.

Does the Village have a bulk clean-up day?

Yes, we have a bulk pick-up day in the Spring and the Fall.  Contact the Village Clerk to see what items are allowed and the dates of the pick-up.

Does the Village of Pocahontas provide police protection?

Yes, the Village of Pocahontas has a part-time officer. To contact them, please call the Bond County Sheriff’s Department so that the officer can be notified.  Their phone number is (618)664-2151.

Does the Village of Pocahontas have a recycling program?
No
Does the Village have a pet ordinance?
While pets are welcomed, residents are limited to three domestic pets (such as two dogs and a cat). Pets must be inoculated and have a name tag affixed to their collars. All must be confined or on a leash that is no longer than six feet. Animals are not permitted to roam unattended. Barking dogs and crying cats are considered a nuisance. Cruelty to animals shall not be permitted. When walking pets, the attendant must clean up any animal waste and dispose of it properly.
Who do I contact if I have a water/sewer emergency outside business hours?

Our Public Works employees have work cell phones that you can utilize for after hour/emergency.  You can either call (618)882-3200 or (618)882-3300.

When are the board meetings?

Generally, the Board of Trustees meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 7 p.m.  Meeting dates are posted on the door of the Village Hall.

Can I attend the board meetings?

Yes, the public is welcome to attend.

Can I speak at the board meetings?

Yes, citizens are given an opportunity to address the Board of Trustees without prior notification, during the ‘Public Comment’ portion of the Board meetings.
Upon recognition by the Mayor/President, members of the public may address the Board and are given three (3) minutes to speak on any non-agenda item. As this is not a question-and-answer opportunity, the Board may or may not respond to any questions asked at this time or later during the meeting.
Some items brought before the Board of Trustees will include Public Hearings. These items will include a 'public comment' period, often after a staff presentation, where interested parties may speak on the item being discussed. Again, you may speak upon recognition by the Mayor/President.
